Self-awareness
Self-awareness. People care about it way too much. I don't.
Don't get me wrong, I like a little introspection. But at the end of the day, what's the point of being self-aware if you won't do anything about it?
Here's how I see it:
1. Self-awareness + arrogance = Entitled asshole who does nothing
2. Self-awareness + acceptance + action = A forever-learning, open-to-feedback person
Now, let me break it down for you...
You'll find the first type in toxic relationships. It can be with a partner, a parent, or (if you're really unlucky) a coworker.
"I am the way I am, take it or leave it." "If you don't like it, there's the door." "I'm not changing for anyone."
These people know they could do better but don't want to.
The second type is the ones you want in your life. They're the ones who build great workplace cultures and great relationships.
"I messed up, and I'm going to make it right." "I'm not great at this yet, but I'm willing to work to improve."
These folks know their weaknesses, accept them, and then take action to improve.
So, next time someone tells you about self-awareness, ask them: "Great, but what are you doing about it?"
Because at the end of the day, it's not about what you know—it's about what you do with that knowledge.
