You're Not Bad, You're Just New

So, you think you're bad at something?

Well, I've got news for you: you're not bad, you're just new.

I could end this blog post right here, but since we're not on Twitter and I've got a lot to say, let's dive a little deeper.

Picture this: you're at the gym, watching a guy struggle with bench presses.

He turns to you and says, "Bro, I'm just bad at it."

But here's the thing - he only started hitting the gym two weeks ago.

Two weeks! Can anyone become a lifting legend in 14 days? Of course not.

But should he label himself as "bad"? Absolutely not.

Now, I get it. "I'm bad at it" is just a phrase people throw around.

But have you ever stopped to think about what it does to your mindset? 3 things:

  1. It tricks your brain into believing you're not good enough, and maybe never will be.

  2. It broadcasts to everyone around you that you're not worth their time or association in this particular area.

  3. It gives you a cozy excuse to not improve, because hey, you're "just bad" at it, right? No need to face that social embarrassment of being a beginner.

Most people lean into that (3) point, thinking it's no big deal.

I mean, who really cares if you're not a pro, right?

But in doing so, they're unknowingly absorbing the serious downsides of points (1) and (2).

So, here's a radical idea: next time you start something new and you're not instantly a master, try saying, "I'm learning, and I'll be better in two months." Embrace the learning curve. Own your beginner status.

Because the truth is, you're not bad. You're just new. And that's a beautiful thing.
